Journée Franco-Japonaises en honneur de Kazuo Okamoto Autour de Equations de Painlevé

10-13 November 2008
Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg)

Official Web Site in IRMA

We have Okamoto's memorial workshop for his 60th birthday on 10th-13th November 2008 at Strasbourg. We will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of Paul Painlevé's flight, which is the first flight of mathematicians.

Professor Kazuo Okamoto is a pioneer in the study of the Painlevé equations. He studied the initial value spaces, the Bäcklund transformations, the Hamitonian structure of isomodromic deformations, tau fucntions and so on. Now many of his study is developped by many successors. He has visited Strasbourg many times. He plays an important role in good connection between Strasbourg and Japan.

Wilber and Painleve In 1908 Wilber Wright demonstrated his aiplane in France. He chose Camp d'Auvours, 11 kilometers east of Le Mans, as a flying field. On 10th October, Paul Painlevé' flew as a passenger of Wilber Wright for 1 hour 10 minute. This is a world record of passenger flight at that time. The flight distance is 55km (actual distance is 80km) and the flight altitude is 10m. The right picture is Wilber Wright and Paul Painlevé (this picture is taken from a collection of Paul Painlevé's photographs edited by his son, Jean after Paul's death).
